Become a Certified Hypnotist

By: Kevin Linehan

One step in my lifelong curiosity of going about making life changes was to become a certified hypnotist. I learned about hypnosis over 25 years ago but it wasn’t until I became a certified hypnotist that I learned how to effectively guide and help others in making change in their lives. Learning the tool of  hypnosis is the easy part; it is developing the ability to use the state of hypnosis to help a person make desired changes that requires training and practice.

Hypnotic techniques and language can be used effectively in our every day lives. Face it, we give suggestions all the time and just about all communication is persuasive. Whenever we have a conversation, we encourage others to think or feel a certain way. Since persuasion works both ways, we are equally susceptible to the communication of other people. Once you recognize the effect of your communication you can use it with friends, family, co-workers, customers to their benefit as well as yours. The meaning of communication in not what is intended but rather what is received. For example a parent telling their child to eat everything on their plate may be intended to send the message of don’t waste food. What is received by the child may be it’s okay to overeat, or worse I’d better overeat or mom is going to get mad at me. This “waking suggestion” may remain with that child for the rest of their lives.

Developing communication skills is a large part of hypnosis certification training and for that reason hypnosis training is especially beneficial to those in the health professions. Therapists, counselors, social workers, doctors, dentists, chiropractors, nurses and teachers could all benefit from the techniques learned on the way to becoming a certified hypnotist. Enhancing your skills and adding hypnosis to your current practice or job is not only beneficial, it may even qualify for CEU’s if you are in a field that requires on-going education. Even emergency workers can benefit. In meeting a victim there is a big difference in the rapport that is gained with them between simply saying “calm down” and saying “the worst is over and I’m here to help you”.

While learning hypnosis induction and deepening techniques are part of the training, the fact is they are easily learned. What is needed and available is ample time to practice those skills while receiving the appropriate feedback. In addition, specific educational modules include stress and weight management, smoking cessation, self-hypnosis, eliminating fears and how to use hypnosis as easily with groups as you will with individual clients. A very important part of the course is learning when to refer a potential client to a medical professional or when to ask for a Doctor’s referral before working with a client.

There are many hypnosis certifications available. Some are only available to Doctors, Dentists and Psychiatrists. Others like that offered by the National Guild of Hypnotists is open to anyone with a desire to learn these amazing tools. The National Guild of Hypnotists was established in 1951 and currently has over 8000 members worldwide, making it the largest hypnosis organization in the world.
